Sometimes it is simply necessary to have your locks replaced because they have become old. If this is the case, the locks are starting to fail and it’s time to replace them. Many locks can be repaired; but most repairs are only a temporary solution to a worn lock that will eventually need to be replaced.
Door locks provide the most security within your home. Most people don’t know that locks require a lot of maintenance, just like other mechanical systems in the home. No matter what kind of security lock you have, following these tips will ensure that every door is in top condition and will last for many years to come.
Keep locks clean and well lubricated
Few people know that door locks require regular cleaning – but only with the right tools. Lubricate doors annually with lubricant or penetrating oil. Spray the lubricant into the lock, and fumble the key back and forth a few times to get it all over the lock. Door locks should be wiped with a wet cloth from time to time to remove dust that can build up and clog the lock. We recommend that you only use a mild detergent, otherwise the finish of the lock may be damaged. Security locks, biometric locks, keyless door locks and electronic locks usually have specific cleaning procedures, so make sure you only clean it according to the specifications provided – and if you don’t know these, contact the manufacturer to ask.
Make copies of the keys
When you get a brand new lock installed, keep one of the original keys to make copies. Keys are usually subject to wear and tear before the locks are replaced, and key replacements are usually necessary – but if your keys wear out, the newly copied key may no longer fit properly in the lock. If you really want a working key, make sure you keep an extra copy of the original to make copies with.
Hang and align the doors properly
If your door is not properly secured, the lock will not activate fully or it may not work at all. Small misalignments in the door suspension can be tricky to find, but even the tiniest misalignments work on the lock. Think of pressure, warping and mechanical deformation. If your door is stuck or sagging, it puts too much pressure on the lock and eventually causes problems that can make it harder for you to close or open the door. It is important to note that the space between the door frame and the door itself is evenly spaced around the entire perimeter of the door, and is less than a quarter of an inch wide.
Newly Moved?
Moreover, it is smart to have the lock change if you move to another house. If you do not do this, you run the risk of burglary by anyone who also has a set of keys to this house before you moved in, such as the previous occupants of the building.
