CBSE class 9 lays the foundation for higher studies. It is a very important stage of life that should not be taken lightly. In class 9 students are taught the basics of high school education. Learning the topics properly from an early stage is very crucial because all the topics taught in classes 10, 11, and 12 are based on class 9 concepts only. NCERT books focus on building their foundations. The schools affiliated with CBSE follow the NCERT curriculum only. It is important for students to learn subjects like maths and science properly as basic concepts of these subjects will be extremely useful in the future. For proper preparation having a good understanding of the syllabus is extremely important.
CBSE class 9 syllabus –
The whole class 9 syllabus is divided into five subjects namely- Maths, science, social science, English and any other language. All these five subjects are equally important and should be prepared well.
Among all the subjects most students find mathematics to be the toughest. Students should know the CBSE syllabus and latest paper pattern for class 9 maths before starting preparation. For the academic year, 2021-2022, the board has updated its syllabus and has divided it into two terms as the exams will also be conducted in two terms. If prepared well students can score 100 out of 100 in maths, but for scoring full marks students must at least know the syllabus. CBSE class 9 maths syllabus is explained below term-wise.

Internal assessments in mathematics include subject enrichment activities, periodic tests, and assignments given by the teacher. Internal assessment is important as it also contributes to forming the final result of a student, therefore students should score well in internal assessment as well. To score well in class 9 mathematics students should follow the CBSE prescribed syllabus and should practice a lot to master any concept.
Important topics chapter-wise for term 1 examinations are given below –
UNIT-1: NUMBER SYSTEM
Chapter 1: Number system- This chapter is the easiest and scoring. Questions from this chapter mainly are asked from topics like rationalization, laws of exponents, and non-terminating numbers. Students are advised to cover this chapter quickly as possible because it requires less time than others.
UNIT-2: ALGEBRA
Chapter 4: Linear equation in two variables – The linear equation is an important chapter and carries overall 5 marks. From this chapter, students should prepare topics like graphs of linear equations and types of solutions. Questions from these topics are most frequently asked.
UNIT-3: COORDINATE GEOMETRY
Chapter 3: Coordinate geometry- Students find this chapter most interesting because it is easy and introduces mathematical graphs to students. Being the easiest chapter this only carries 4 marks in total. Students should plot the coordinates clearly and explicitly to score full marks in this chapter.
UNIT- 4: GEOMETRY
Chapter 6: Lines and Angles – Students usually find geometry a little bit difficult. Geometry in term 1 has a weightage of around 13 marks which makes it important. In lines and angles, most questions are asked from angle sum property and parallel lines.
Chapter 7: Triangles – This is a chapter that is new to students because it includes proving theorems. To do well in this chapter students need good logical skills. The most important topics in this chapter are the congruency of triangles, properties, and inequalities of triangles. To practice well in this chapter students often take help from reference books like RS Aggarwal. To check their method of answering students can take help from RS Aggarwal Class 9 Chapter 7 Solutions available online.
UNIT-5: MENSURATION
Chapter 12: Heron’s formula: This is a small chapter with only one concept and its applications. It carries only 4 marks in total and is not very important but is easy to score at. To score well in this chapter students should know the application of Heron’s formula in finding the area of triangles and quadrilaterals.
UNIT-6: STATISTICS & PROBABILITY-
Chapter 14: Statistics: It is an easy yet important chapter. If you apply formulas well and do the calculations right then you can easily score full marks in this chapter. Important topics chapter-wise for term 2 examinations are given below-
UNIT-7: ALGEBRA-
Chapter 2: Polynomials- It is a chapter that carries high weightage and is extremely important. Most questions are asked from topics like remainder theorem and algebraic identities.
UNIT-8: GEOMETRY-
Chapter-8: Quadrilaterals: It is one of the toughest and most important chapters. It carries high weightage and most questions asked are from angle sum property and mid-point theorem.
Chapter-10: Circles- It is a lengthy and time-consuming chapter. Important topics in this chapter are angle subtended by a chord and perpendicular from the centre to the chord. Theorems are of utmost importance in this chapter.
Chapter-11: Construction: It is the easiest chapter of class 9 maths and doesn’t require much preparation. Students are only required to do good practice.
UNIT-9: MENSURATION
Chapter-13: Surface Area and volume: To score well in this chapter students should learn all the formulas well. This chapter carries high weightage and should be prepared properly.
UNIT-10: STATISTICS & PROBABILITY
Chapter-15: Probability: It is a scoring chapter that doesn’t require much time. Students should practice NCERT well for this chapter.
To sum up –
Students should study all the important topics mentioned above and should practice a lot. For practice, NCERT books are best recommended but students also do additional practice from reference books like RS Aggarwal and RD Sharma to improve their score in the CBSE class 9 maths examination.
