Precautions for raising flowers in winter

    JohnBy JohnMarch 16, 2021No Comments4 Mins Read

Flowers are becoming a new fashion in people’s mind, whether as decoration or gifts, flowers are becoming more and more people’s choice. With winter approaching, how to choose plants and how to create a suitable environment for them to grow has become a key issue in raising flowers. I have compiled a flower strategy for you to help your plants survive the winter. If you want to send flowers to China, welcome to sammygift.

    1. Suitable temperature

For flowers that can withstand cold temperatures (5-12 ℃), cold temperatures (below 5 ℃), such as: pomegranate, moon, plum and other flowers, can be placed in the outdoor courtyard or balcony sunny place.

For flowers that need to be kept in medium temperature (12-20℃), such as: white orchids, camellias, azaleas and other flowers, they must be moved indoors before the temperature drops to 10℃.

For flowers that can only grow normally at high temperatures (18-30°C), such as jasmine, daffodils, blossoms, and cacti, they must be moved indoors before the temperature drops to 12°C. Before the temperature drops to 5 ℃ with a plastic bag over the pot, the plastic bag should be tied tightly, in the bag to leave a small amount of air holes. When the weather is clear and windless, move them outside for a few hours of sunlight around noon, then move them back indoors to keep them warm.

    2. Maintain humidity

Many indoor flowers in homes like high air humidity, such as: azaleas, greens, camellias, and lilies of the valley. However, most winter indoor heating is sufficient and the air is dry. In this case, we should often spray and wash the foliage with water similar to the indoor temperature to keep the potting soil moist and avoid the phenomenon of yellow leaves.

    3. Watering moderately

After winter, the temperature is low and water evaporation is relatively slow. Therefore, to keep the potting soil dry, you need to water less. In winter, plants are in a slow growth and semi-dormant state, so the potting soil should not be overly moist. Due to the low temperature, the water used for watering flowers also needs to pay attention to the temperature to prevent excessive damage to the root system. Shade-tolerant flowers need to avoid root rot caused by excessive watering. Usually, the most appropriate time for watering is 3 to 4 hours around noon.

    4. Fertilize in moderation

As mentioned above, most flowers go into dormancy in winter and their metabolism is slow, so generally potted flowers should be fertilized under strict control, and fertilization should be minimized or stopped. Indoor flowers that are not dormant in winter, for example, evergreen flowers such as green lilies, tiger orchids, brown bamboo, etc., do not require fertilizer when the room temperature is around 5°C, so they do not need to be fertilized. If the indoor temperature is high, and winter flowering flowers, such as: primroses, red palm, cyclamen, etc., you need to apply a thin organic liquid fertilizer once every half month, or a small amount of compound chemical fertilizer.

    5. Pay attention to ventilation

Take care to ventilate regularly, preferably on sunny days when the sun is shining, or at noon when the temperature is high. When ventilating, you must be careful not to let the cold wind blow directly against the plant to avoid adverse reactions.

    6. Pest and disease control

For begonias, roses, camellias and other flowering trees whose leaves are prone to pests and diseases, collect the dead branches and leaves under their plants and burn them to reduce the occurrence of diseases in the coming year. In winter, some shallow pots of landscape bonsai and stump bonsai must be carefully managed, and can be placed in places where they do not freeze, and regularly given watering and spraying, so that they can safely overwinter.
