Project management best practices are the documented, repeatable processes or high-level guidelines that can be implemented by project managers to help them manage projects successfully. A methodology is therefore a set of rules which should be followed in each specific case. It implies developing methodical thinking and consistent application of these methods. Some time ago there were only a few methodologies and now there are hundreds.
What is project management?
Project management is the process of managing a project from start to finish, ensuring that all aspects of the project are completed successfully and on time. Project managers use a variety of project management tools and techniques to plan, organize, and control the project, as well as to track progress and ensure that all stakeholders are informed about the project’s status.
Different theories of project management
There are a number of different theories of project management, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. The three most common theories are the waterfall model, agile methodology (Scrum), and the balanced scorecard (BSC).
III. Agile Methodology (Scrum)
In the agile methodology, also known as Scrum, project managers break projects up into small tasks that can be completed in a short period of time. There are usually a few high-level tasks for a new project and every day the team assigns each member a task to work on. The team meets daily to discuss the tasks and any challenges they are facing. On a weekly basis, there are sprint planning meetings that are typically attended by all stakeholders who can then provide feedback that may affect the project.
Agile methodology has several advantages over other types of project management methodologies. First, it is better at promoting creative thinking and idea collaboration and it can be done with a smaller team. Agile is also more flexible than other methodologies, allowing for changes to project scope based on new information and can handle projects that have some uncertainty or risk. Finally, it has shorter timeframes than other approaches so the planned costs are typically lower as well.
But there are also some disadvantages to agile methodology. First, it can be more difficult to track progress and ensure that all tasks are completed on time. Second, it can be less effective for larger projects with many stakeholders. Finally, it is often more expensive than the waterfall model as it requires greater resources and more frequent meetings.
Waterfall Method
The waterfall method is a sequential software development process. It is a graphical representation of the software development process that shows how the system is decomposed into successive stages. The waterfall model is often used in software development because it is a sequential process that can be easily tracked. The sequential nature of the waterfall model also makes it easy to identify potential problems and correct them early in the development process.
Kanban Method
Kanban is a visual system for managing work. It is based on the idea of “just in time” production. Kanban helps to optimize the flow of work by allowing you to see how much work is in progress and how much work is available. Kanban also helps to identify bottlenecks in the workflow.
lean Method
Lean is a powerful strategy for driving growth and delivering outstanding customer service. It is an approach that has been developed over decades of work in industry and developed into a robust management system. Lean transforms organizations by helping them to build strong holistic relationships with customers and employees.
Hybrid Project Management Method
A hybrid project management method is a combination of two or more project management methods. The hybrid method allows you to take the best aspects of each method and create a process that is specific to your project. The hybrid method can be customized to meet the needs of your project and your team.
